100 years of Büchel

100 years of Büchel

Our moving history in moving pictures.

1920. The Peace Treaty of Versailles comes into force. The state of Thuringia is created. And it is in this very country, in the town of Zella-Mehlis, that the brothers Hugo and Karl Büchel found their company. Tuning forks and toolboxes are initially manufactured there, followed a little later by bicycle parts, especially pedals and hubs.

2020. Büchel manufactures vehicle parts not only in Zella-Mehlis, but at 4 other locations in Germany, 2 in China and one in India. The focus of production today is on LED bicycle lighting, spokes and nipples, wheel guards and luggage carriers. In addition to the BÜCHEL brand, 4 other brands belong to the company: VUELTA and EXAL (rims and wheels), WITTKOP (bicycle saddles) and SEKURA (bicycle locks). We have even made a name for ourselves as a supplier to the automotive industry.

In between lie 100 eventful years. Years of research, development, growth and success. But also years full of fateful setbacks – which then only spurred us on all the more to look forward again.

This short film gives an insight into our eventful history.

Safer on the road with bright brake light

Safer on the road with bright brake light

A big plus in safety for cyclists offers the BÜCHEL tail light Edge with integrated Z-reflector, the first sensor-controlled brake light for bicycles according to the new StVZO and ECE directive.

The STOPTECH brake light function is a joint development with the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden. The sensor technology, which detects the deceleration of the speed during braking, eliminates the need for a connection to the braking system via cable. The ECE directive states that the minimum value of the brake light must be 40 candela, which is several times brighter than the short-term signaling previously permitted by the StVZO. The brightness of the Edge brake light at 45 candela is more than five times that of the tail light. This considerably increases safety in road traffic.

Many current bicycle models, whether with or without electric assistance, have a rather angular design. BÜCHEL has picked up on this with the LED tail light Edge, which is equipped with quality LEDs from Osram. The light is mounted on the luggage carrier (mounting width 50 or 80 mm) and integrates seamlessly into the visual appearance of modern bicycles.

Paper instead of plastic

Paper instead of plastic

We have already converted 50% of our packaging.

What can be done about the growing mountains of plastic waste? Plastic waste is a plague of the 21st century. Every year, around ten million tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans. That’s a load of a 20-ton truck every minute. There is hardly a corner on earth that is not affected. Plastic residues in beach bays, in mountain rivers, in the Arctic sea, in fish stomachs, in the food chain and in the human organism.

More and more companies are trying to stem the tide of plastic. Consumers and manufacturers are gradually realizing that the world needs alternatives to plastic packaging. At our company, the switch from so-called blister packaging to cardboard packaging began last year, and in the meantime more than 50 tons of plastic have been saved,” explains our Managing Director Erhard Büchel. In the meantime, a large part of the product packaging has already been converted.

What was initially set in motion by customer-specific requests will be successively implemented for all products, i.e. also for Büchel’s own products. “Our goal is for almost 100 percent of the packaging to be recyclable, and even the packaging for the saddles has already been converted to cardboard.” When asked about additional costs, Büchel shakes his head, “We’ve been able to absorb the costs so far.” Paper instead of plastic, that would already do the world a lot of good.

Büchel receives “Innovative through research” seal

Büchel receives “Innovative through research” seal

We have received an award from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

Award for Büchel GmbH & Co. Fahrzeugteilefabrik KG at the highest level: The seal “Innovative through Research” has now been awarded by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. This seal certifies that innovation and research are essential components of our corporate policy. The slogan “Technology around the bike” is Büchel’s program: As a producer and supplier, the company offers quality products for the bike, lifestyle products are now just as much part of the range as parts for the automotive industry.

Since 2002, Büchel Felgenproduktion and Vuelta Deutschland GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary, have been working together with the Steinbeis Transfer Center at Chemnitz Technical University to develop mechanical systems and testing equipment for the technical implementation of their own ideas. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden, highly innovative lighting equipment for bicycles is being developed, including brake lights that operate by means of sensors without a cable connection. The Medicus range of bicycle saddles from the Wittkop subsidiary, which has received a great deal of attention from experts, was developed in collaboration with orthopedist Torsten Werlich from Fulda.

The company holds over 122 industrial property rights, the majority of which are registered trademarks and designs, so-called “design patents”, as well as 25 patents and utility models. New product ideas are implemented by the company’s own designers and technicians and brought to series maturity, with the equipment and tools required for this being manufactured in the company’s own group of companies.

The “Innovative through Research” seal, which is valid for two years, was first awarded to Büchel in 2016. The Stifterverband is one of the largest private sponsors of science in Germany. In addition to its commitment to young academics, excellent universities and cutting-edge research, it is also its task to examine and evaluate the German research and innovation system. How much does industry invest in research and development in Germany? What impact does this have on the future viability of this country? The Stifterverband awards the “Innovative through Research” seal to all research-based companies that participate in the biennial full survey of business research and development in Germany.

We are very grateful for this award!

We warmly welcome our new trainees!

We warmly welcome our new trainees!

We have been successfully training for over half a century.

Trainees quickly take on responsibility with us.

The spectrum of apprenticeships in the Büchel GmbH & Co. Fahrzeugteilefabrik KG is wide-ranging.

For half a century now, about ten new apprentices have been welcomed every year at the company headquarters and at the individual locations in Germany and prepared for their employment as industrial clerks, office clerks, wholesale and foreign trade clerks, toolmakers or plastic moulders. Another new addition is the cooperation with the Private University of Applied Sciences in Fulda, where the starting signal has been given for a student who is completing the dual study programme “SME Management”. Owner Erhard Büchel and managing director Oliver Venohr agree to train the next generation of managers from their own ranks, if possible, which is why the takeover rate averages 80 percent. The opportunities for promotion are diverse and attractive: whether sales manager, head of key account/e-commerce or even the deputy purchasing manager – all of them once started their careers as trainees in the company.

Without question, an apprenticeship in the company is versatile and demanding, because the young people are quickly encouraged to take on responsibility and make decisions. Erhard Büchel humorously points out: “While trainees in other companies are busy filing mail, they are already making purchases worth millions at our company.

In the picture (from left to right): Managing Director Oliver Venohr, Emiliano Kessler (apprentice industrial clerk), Kevin Ginter (also apprentice industrial clerk) and Erik Usinger (dual study programme in middle management).

Carbon neutral parcel shipping

Carbon neutral parcel shipping

A small contribution to climate protection: We have been participating in the GLS KlimaProtect program since October 2019.

The certificate states that we actively participated in the GLS KlimaProtect program in the period from October 2019 to December 2019 and thus handled the parcel shipment via General Logistics Systems Germany GmbH & Co. OHG in a climate-neutral manner. This year, of course, it continues…

The CO2 emissions generated during parcel transport are offset by investments in an externally certified forest protection and reforestation project (VCS/CCB standard). Further info at: https://gls-group.eu/DE/de/klima-protect
